Vertigo is a sensation of imbalance (disequilibrium), or spinning which originates from the inner ear or other motion sensors or the central nervous system. Positional vertigo results when patient moves head to a new position or sits up from the bed. Vertigo is a symptom of a serious disease rather than a disease by itself. It is an early sign of stroke which when diagnosed in time can avoid serious complications. In general, any problem that interferes with sensory function of vision, balance, or proprioception and control system results in disequilibrium or vertigo.
